Biography

William Chandler Vincent was born on 23 Aug 1857 in Colrain, Franklin, Massachusetts, United States to John Vincent and Sophia Ellen (Porter) Vincent.^[1]

William lived his early life in Colrain, growing up with his parents and later, his brother Frank Vincent. In 1860 the family was living with "Willie's" paternal grandparents, Chandler and Jane Vincent. Both William's grandfather and father are shown as farmers on the census record.^[2] In 1865 the family unit was the same.^[3] When the 1870 census was taken the family had grown with the birth of Willie's brother, Frank in 1876.^[4]

There is information that William married Laura Isabella Joslyn 27 Jun 1878 in Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts, United States.^[5] Laura died on 26 May 1889. The death record shows that she was married at the time of her death.^[6] This raises a question since we find William marrying someone else in California on 27 Jan 1889, four months before Laura's death.^[7]

By January of 1889 William had relocated to Curry County, Oregon, United States. On 26 January he and Frances Margaret "Annie" Gray applied for a marriage license in Del Norte County, California, United States. They were married on the following day, 27 January 1889.^[7]

We find William registering to vote in Del Norte County on 25 Jul 1894. The record shows that he was 35 years old at that time, 5 ft., 9 1/2 in. tall with a light complexion, blue eyes and black hair. He was living in Crescent City, Del Norte, California, United States.^[8] William again registered to vote in Del Norte County on 3 Jun 1896. The information is the same except for the addition that William was a laborer and could read and write.^[9]

When the census was taken on 1 Jun 1900, William and Annie were living on A Street in Crescent City. William was working as a painter. There is an interesting mistake in this census. William who would have been 43 at this time is shown as 60 years old.^[10]

William died on 11 Dec 1904 at home in Crescent City by electrocution. There had been some problem with the wiring that came into his home. His wife had called the utility company for service, but they had not arrived at the time William returned home from work. He went out to investigate the problem and apparently grasped a live wire which gave him a tremendous shock which then caused his demise. ^[11] William is buried in the IOOF Cemetery (Old South section), a part of the Crescent City Cemetery in Crescent City.^[12]
