Biography

William was born in 1866. He is the son of Samuel Vines and Sarah Seamans. [1]

Jan. 21, 1866 Saratoga Springs Saratoga County New York, USA Death: Jan. 6, 1930 Bellingham Whatcom County Washington, USA

From FAG contributor Robert E. Vines: William E. Vines was the Grandfather of Henry Ellsworth Vines, Jr. (Tennis Champion).

HEART TROUBLE ENDS ACTIVE CAREER W. E. Vines, Owner of String of Public Markets, Sudden Victim at 10:45 a.m. JOKING BEFORE DEATH End Comes When Indications Pointed to Recovery. Succumbing to coronary thrombosis, which resulted from the inflammation of the artery around the heart, W. E. Vines, one of the leading public market men of the coast and long one of Bellingham's most constructive citizens, died suddenly about 10:45 a.m. today at St. Joseph's hospital. He would have been 64 years of age January 21.

Five minutes before he died he was joking with one of the hospital's sisters and appeared to be well on the road to recovery. Vines was taken ill the day following Christmas, in Seattle. One the afternoon of December 26 he entered the Virginia Mason hospital and he remained there until Sunday afternoon, when he was removed to St. Joseph's. He made the journey from Seattle in an ambulance, arriving there about 3 p.m.

Mr. Vines' physician, Dr. William D. Kirkpatrick, who was also one of his closest friends, said that he was feeling well Sunday evening, and, in fact, until five minutes before his death.

SHOCK TO CITY Connected as he has been with so many civic enterprises in Bellingham, where he had lived since 1916, the death of Mr. Vines was one of the greatest shocks the city has ever received, particularly in view of the fact that he had shown steady improvement and hoped soon to return to his manifold duties as the active director of eight public markets.

He leaves as immediate relatives his widow, Mrs. Katherine Vines, and two sons, Ellsworth and George. Ellsworth had been his assistant for the last two years. George became resident manager of the Portland market when it was opened on November 9, 1920.

Mr. Vines' first market was opened on October 12, 1916, at the corner of Cornwall avenue and magnolia street, where it stands today. When he died he was conducting markets also at Everett, Bremerton, Olympia, Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Yakima and Portland.

ACTIVE CIVIC WORKER In addition to his market activities, Mr. Vines took a leading part in Bellingham's civic life. In 1925 he was president of the Tulip Festival association and under his direction there was staged one of the most colorful and successful Tulip celebrations the city has ever seen. He was a member of Bellingham Elks' lodge, No. 194, and of the Bellingham Rotary club. Mr. Vines was a very companionable person and was strongly attached to his friends, and they to him.

Born at Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1866, Mr. Vines spent his youth in the East. He worked along the Hudson river in the tea and coffee business as district manager for the Union Pacific Tea Company. In 1898 he removed to Chicago as Western manager for this company. He continued West to Seattle in 1902, becoming connected with the Crescent Manufacturing Company and remaining with it two years. . .

Funeral announcements will be made by the Arthur C. Harlow mortuary. From The Bellingham Herald of January 6, 1930

Burial: Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
