Son of Jabez Vines and Elizabeth Champion.
Samuel was the son of Jabez Vines of Reading, Berkshire, who was 4th child of Samuel's Grandfather, David Vines (1760-1830). David Vines had left the farm at Grittenham about 1780 and moved to Reading, Berkshire where he married in 1784.

Samuel's eldest son John Maurice O'Connell Vines was born in Para, Brazil on 12 March 1853. Married Florence Marion Young in 1885 at Paddington London. He died in Paddington in 1893
Frederick Austen Vines was also born in the state of Para Brazil, on 22 April 1856. Married Charlotte Balfour Collum 5th July 1881 in St. Stephens Church, Bayswater, London; she was born abt. 1860 in Malabar, Bombay, India. Died in Santa Barbara California bet. 13 Jul 1885 - 13 Jul 1886.
Charles James Vines, was born at St Michael's, The Azores, on 4 June 1858. Died1 Feb 1928 in 64 Curzon St. London, England
