Robert was born in 1833 in Somerset. He was baptised on 6 Sep 1833 at St John The Baptist, Pitney-by-Langport, Somerset, England.[1]
By 1859 Robert was in Tasmania. There he married Harriet Pestel at Fingal. [2]
A Robert Viney was proprietor of the Tasmanian Hotel, Fingal (1864).[3][4] An attempt to retire from the business in 1862 may not have been successful:
"FINGAL.

IN consequence of the present occupier, Mr Robert Viney, being about to retire from public business, and his lease expiring on the 1st of May next; the above offers a very favorable opportunity.

For full and satisfactory particulars, apply to the proprietor, Mr. D. BESTELL, Fingal; or to Mr. R. VINEY, On the Premises."[5]
A Robert Viney also had land in the County of Cornwall, presumably for gold mining.[6][7]
Harriet died in 1875 having given birth to seven sons followed by two daughters:
"MR ROBERT VINEY Another prominent townsman of Fingal, in the personof Mr Robert Viney, passed away on Saturday night. He was well and favorably known throughout Tasmania. Deceased, who was 66 years of age, was twice married, and leaves a widow and large grown-up family."[11]
"FINGAL. The funeral of the late Robert Viney was, despite the inclement weather, numerously and representatively at-tended. The interment took place in the Church of England cemetery, the deceased being laid to rest beside his first wife, who pre-deceased him several years ago. Rev. Hurburgh conducted the burial service, and Mr. John Warring conducted the interment arrangements. At the service held in the Church before proceeding to the place of interment, three favorite hymnns of deceased's, Nos. 24, 288, and 23, were sung by the choir, and as the cortege left the building the "Dead March in Saul" was rendered by Miss Lyne on the organ."[12]
Research Notes
A currently unlisted son of Robert's marriage to Harriet was married in 1954 in Tasmania:
