Linda Sue Vinson was born April 13, 1951, in Fordyce, Dallas County, Arkansas, to Walter Embry Vinson, Jr., and Virginia Volnie Houston Vinson. At age 9, while in fourth grade at Fordyce Grammar School, she began spelling her name "Lynda" to distinguish it from the three other girls in her class with first name "Linda," the trendiest name ever in US history, according to a study of the Social Security database by biotechnologist David Taylor. After the family moved to Clarendon, Monroe County, Arkansas, in 1963, she attended Clarendon schools from 7th through 10th grades. The family moved again in 1967 to Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas. Lynda attended 11th grade there and then lived with aunts Hattie & Myrtis Vinson in Fordyce her senior year. She graduated from Fordyce High School in 1969 and attended State College of Arkansas (now University of Central Arkansas) for two years.
She married three times: to Johnny Archie Ford in 1971, with whom she had two children; to Tommy Lee Kerr in 1983, with whom she had one child; and to Larry Joe Owens in 2015.
