Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
Rezin Virgin is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A119011.
This profile is part of the Virgin Name Study.

The following five paragraphs are taken from Virgin Vicissitudes, the first four paraphrased and the fifth quoted verbatim.[1]

Rezin Virgin was born about 1750, probably in what is now Montgomery County, Maryland (then it was Frederick County but had been Prince George's County before that). In about 1770 or 1771, he married Jemima Arnold, most likely in what is now Fayette County, Pennsylvania.[1]

On 3 Jul 1771, Rezin purchased 323-3/4 acres of land called “Three Springs” from Joseph Snively. He later sold this land to Andrew Arnold (perhaps a relative of his wife). Rezin bought and sold numerous other tracts of land before moving his family across the Monongahela River to present-day Fayette County, Pennsylvania because of Indian raids on the western side of that river.[1]

In April 1776 Rezin and eight other men traveled via the Monongahela, Allegheny, Youghiogheny, and Ohio Rivers and then via a number of small creeks to a camp on what is now Washington, Kentucky, and then on to what is now Bourbon County, near present-day Paris, Kentucky, where they made some improvements. When Rezin returned home, the Revolution was under way and he joined the militia, serving as a Captain.[1]

Rezin continued to buy land and, at one time, owned all the land along a bend of the Monongahela River on the eastern side. By 1803, Rezin had sold or deeded these lands to his sone Eli and Kinsey and his brother-in-law Jonathan Arnold and moved to Kentucky, receiving a patent for 1,000 acres of land in Bourbon County and buying addition acreage. Since Bourbon County deeds say that Rezin was of that county as late as 1805, it would be safe to place his removal to Greenup County, Kentucky in late 1805 or early 1806.[1]

"From 1815 to 1826, Rezin Virgin, Sr. deeded over 1700 acres of land to various persons including the 500 acre tract (less 100 acres sold to David Enslow) on which old Rezin and Jemima lived. This 400 acres plus another 140 acres on Old Town Creek were sold to his son, Rezin, Jr. in 1815. The last deed involving old Rezin Virgin was made on 25 November 1826. His wife did not join in the deed, so perhaps she was dead by then. The first deed whereby Rezin Virgin, Jr. changed to Rezin Virgin, Sr. (after his father was apparently dead) was on 23 October 1828 and the deed includes the statement “being the farm on which Rezin Virgin the father of the party of the first part lived and died being on the northwest side of Old Town Creek”. From this information it can be assumed that old Rezin Virgin died sometime between 25 November 1826 and 23 October 1828."[1]

From History of Greenup County, Kentucky:[2]

Three brothers, Ebenezer, Samuel, and Jeremiah Virgin, came from England to America. Ebenezer, with one hundred families, settled at Concord, New Hampshire. Samuel, a sea captain, was drowned at sea. Jeremiah settled in Virginia and his son Jeremiah married Lucy Dickinson about 1735. Their children were Reason (or Rezin), Brice, Kinsey, John, Thomas, and Lucy. The five sons were in the Revolutionary War, four being officers. Rezin and Kinsey were captains, Brice a lieutenant, and John a drummer boy. Rezin was appointed captain of militia in Ohio County, Virginia, in 1777.
In 1780 Captain Rezin Virgin located on four hundred acres of land in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He married Jemima Arnold, who was born in Virginia, the daughter of Jonathan and Rachel Scott Arnold, the latter of Talbot County, Maryland. Their children were Lucy (1769), Rachel (1771), Kinsey (1773), Eli (1775), Cassandra, Rebecca, Hannah, and Eleanor. In 1790 the family moved from Uniontown (Beesontown), Pennsylvania, to Limestone (Maysville) and from thee to Cincinnati, where, under a license issued by General Arthur St. Clair, Governor of the Northwest Territory, Lucy was married to John Downs. About 1807 John and Lucy Virgin Downs moved to Oldtown, where Captain Rezin Virgin and family had come about 1800. Rachel married David Enslow; Kinsey married Hannah Tygart; and they moved to Scioto County, Ohio; Eli married Nacka Hyatt; Rezin, Jr., married Polly Ann Lyons; Cassandra married Hezekiah Lyons; Rebecca married John Wells; Hannah married Ephraim Goble; and Eleanor married Moses Everman.

From Virgin Vicissitudes:[1]

We know that Rezin had two slaves at one time. In a list of slave owners in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania made 27 Dec 1732, we find that Rezen Virgin had two slaves, Will, age 15 and Tom, age 7. He also bought two slaves on 20 Jun 1786 in Washington County, Pennslyvania from David Adams and John Linsey of Franklin County, named Jobe and Hannah. No record has been found of the resale of these latter two slaves, although one must exist somewhere. In the tax list of Greenup County, Kentucky in 1806, Rezin Virgin had one black named Tom who was probably the one who was seven years old in 1782. This Tom was deeded to Rezin’s son, Rezin Virgin, Jr., on 27 Jul 1815 when Rezin deeded all his land, livestock, utensils, and household furniture to his son, probably in retun for care in his old age. In this deed, old Rezin stipulated that Tom was not to be. Held as a slave by anyone including Rezin, Jr. after the death of Rezin and Jemima.

Rezin and Jemima had nine children:

Rachel, b. 1771, d. 17 Jun 1848[3]
Kinsey b. 1772, m. Rachel Teagarden, d. 18 Oct 1814[4]
Eli, b. 4 Feb 1776, m. Nancy “Nacca” Hyatt, d. 28 Feb 1819[5]
Cassandra Kezia, b. 10 Feb 1783, m. Hezekiah Lyon, d. 16 Oct 1850[6]
Rebecca, b. 1786, m. John Wells, d. 1 Feb 1867[7]
Hannah, b. 5 Oct 1788, m. Ephraim Goble, d. 13 Sep 1830[8]
Elenor, b. 16 Jun 1794, m. Moses Everman, d. 27 Jun 1864[9]
Rezin Boone, b. 25 Nov 1790, m. Clarinda Womack, d. 14 Dec 1846[10]
Elzey, b. 1799, m. Sarah Downs, d. 1834[11]

Residences of Rezin and Jemima:

1777 - Ohio County, Virginia [2]
1780 - Washington County, Pennsylvania [2]
1786 - Fayette County, Pennsylvania. [12]
1788 - Fayette County, Pennsylvania. [13]
1790 - Luzerne, Fayette County, Pennsylvania [14]
1800 - Luzerne, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. [15]
1810 - Greenup County, Kentucky [16]
1820 - Greenup County, Kentucky [17]

About 1800, Jemima and Rezin moved to Oldtown, Greenup County, Kentucky. Jemima died there in 1824.[18] Rezin died there the next year, in 1825. Both are buried in Old Town Cemetery, Oldtown, Kentucky.[19]

Service in the American Revolution

From Virgin Vicissitudes:[1]

In 1776, the American Revolution was under way and the Indians on the western boundary of the colonies were being stirred by the British in Detroit to keep the colonists on the western front busy. Rather than pursue his land claims in Kentucky, Rezin Virgin decided to stay home and join the militia to protect his family and friends. Although there is evidence that he served as a Captain in the militia of the area as early as late 1776, the first record of his recommendation by Gov. Patrick Henry of Virginia to become a Captain is dated 7 Jan 1777 in the Ohio County, Virginia Court Records. Also, from these records, we learn that his command was produced and sworn to in Apr 1778.
We know that Rezin attended a Council of War held at Catfish Camp in the West Augusta District of Virginia (now Washington, Pennsylvania) on 28 Jan 1777. Reference is also made in a report from Capt. Samuel Measen to Brig. Gen. William Hand to the drawing of reinforcements from Capt. Rezin Virgin’s company for an expedition in Jun 1777.
Reason Virgin and his brother John appear on the list of soldiers who took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of Virginia in Ohio County on 4 Sep 1777 (Alfred Caldwell’s List).
In the winter of 1777-78, about 400 men, under General Edward Hand, went out as a result of Indian attacks in the southwestern Pennsylvania area west of the Monongahela River. When they arrived at the Indian village near the present site of Newcastle, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, there were only women, children, and an old man named Pipe (brother of Capt. Pipe, the great Delaware Indian Chief). The white soldiers were so incensed at the massacres perpetrated on their relatives and friends that they shot Pipe and the record states that “Reasin Virgin passing sunk the tomahawk in his head.” It was called a “misadventure” in contemporary write-ups and General Hand was greatly displeased with it. This is the last record the author has been able to find on the Revolutionary War record of our Capt. Rezin Virgin.

Rezin is named as a patriot ancestor by the Daughters of the American Revolution. His ancestor number is A119011. He served in the Ohio County, Virginia, Militia, as well as taking the oath of allegience . [20]

Research Notes on Children of Rezin Virgin & Jemima Arnold

Dolores Rutherford, in Virgin Vicissitudes,[1] cites family records in naming eight children of Jemima Arnold and Rezin Virgin, including a Rezin Virgin, Jr. The biography of Rezin Virgin in History of Greenup County, Kentucky[2] lists eight children, including a Lucy Virgin who married John Downs, but does not include Rezin Virgin, Jr. We do know that Jemima and Rezin had a son Rezin. Moreover, Dolores Rutherford, in an online post, points out that the Lucy Virgin who married John Downs is the youngest sibling of Rezin Virgin rather than his daughter.[21] Ms. Rutherford also cites proof that Rezin and Jemima had a son Elzey, who she did not list in her 1977 paper Virgin Vicissitudes.
