Jan Nijland Visser was born 2 August 1852 in Franeker, Friesland, Netherlands [1].
His parents are Hoite Jurjens Nijland Visser and Janke Jans Faber. His father registered his birth at the Civil Administration of Franeker two days later (on 4 August 1852). At that time he was living there, 29 years of age and a silversmith by trade.
On 8 May 1878 Jan married Betje Eddina van Slogteren[2]. Both spouses were 25 years old at the time of their marriage. Jan's profession was confectioner. The documents the future spouses were required to provide in order to be allowed to marry, the so called "huwelijkse bijlagen" (appendices to the marriage deed), were preserved [3]. The most interesting one of those is the one (scan 2392) that shows that Jan should have entered military service in 1872. Yet he did not. Instead, he "rented" a substitute. Apparently he and/or his parents had enough money to do so. The replacement had to be made official by a notarial deed [4].

Unfortunately the scan of the 1st page of deed #26 is missing; the scan of the 2nd page is present (scan 52 of 158) which contains however hardy any interesting information.
'Groninger Archieven' (operator of the website) has been informed about the missing scans and will no doubt correct this. At that moment the numbers of the scans may have to be adapted accordingly.
