Date: Mar 24, 1696: Emancipation from slavery: Jan Coenraad Visser, haar ma se eienaar, het op 24 Maart 1696 'n dokument onderteken waar in sy en haar kinders vrygestel word by sy afsterwe. Hy is in 1700 oorlede maar vir onbekende redes is hulle eers in 1702 amptelik vrygestel.[2]
"Coenraad het 'n paar kinders met die slavin Maria van Negapatnam ook bekend as Maria van Bengale gehad. Maria van Negapatnam was gebore c1669, en sy word gedoop as 'n volwassene op 8 Julie 1721 te Stellenbosch toe sy 53 jaar oud was. [8]

Böeseken in Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape 1658-1700, p. 172, Jan Coenraad het 24 Maart 'n kontrak opgeskrywe, hy het verseker dat Maria VAN BENGALE 27/28 jarige en haar drie kinders (Anthony vier jaar oud, Susanna, twee jaar oud, Jacobus een jaar oud) vrygestel moet word nadat hy gesterwe het. [8]
Maria van Negapatnam doop 'n ander dogtertjie in Okt/Nov 1708 met die naam Geertruij, die vader word gegee as Gerrit Elders. Maria van Negapatnam word self gedoop as 'n bejaarde persoon op 8 Junie 1721. [8]
Volgens W H J Hattingh het Maria van Bengale en Hendrik Willemse 'n seun met die naam Willem in die Paarl gedoop op 7 November 1711". [8]

VC 603 is a photocopy made during the 1980s of the original, made for the Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and a copy was donated to the South African Archives, a copy going to the Cape Town repository and to the Pretoria Repository (where it is part of the FC series). The original register is now housed in the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerkargief, Noordwal-Wes, Stellenbosch, as G1 1/1. The transcription was originally made in 2006 by Richard Ball. Corrections were received from Delia Robertson and Alwyn Smit and Corney Keller had now completely revised and amended the original transcript (February 2012).
