Jerome was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in 1825. [1] In 1852 he married Frances Samworth in Greenwich, Kent. [2]
He died in Stalisfield, Kent, in 1877. [3]
History of the Family:
The Vlieland family had originated in Holland but had left at about the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Indeed, father Jerome (Jerone) Nicholas Vlieland has a registered date of birth (27/07/1796) in Yarmouth, Norfolk and also seemingly as Jerome Nicholas Jansen De-Vlieland in Holland. [4]
From the Profile of Father Jerome Vlieland Jerome Vlielandmanaged by Simon Daniell:
Perhaps he left Holland when days old and was ‘re-registered’ on his arrival in Yarmouth to ‘become English’. Many Dutch fled at that time. Indeed, there are other Vlieland’s arriving in Yarmouth at that time (one, John, had been born a year earlier in 1845 and is thus shown as a potential ‘brother’ is some trees).
According to another family tree compiler, there are also IGI records of two Jeroen Vlienlands births in Noordwijk, Zuid Holland, Netherlands around 1745. One of these could be this Jeroen's father or grandfather. The surname for one of these changes to 'Vlielander' - as the name of the father.
According to Dutch sources, when Napoleon invaded, he wanted records of everyone. He therefore insisted that people used a surname - so, it seems, surnames were often 'made up' on the spot. Many simply used the name of the place where they were born.
The date of Jerome's possible arrival could fit with his fleeing Holland at the time of this war/ invasion. There is an island off the coast of Holland named Vlieland. It is suspected therefore that this surname may thus indicate the place of birth, rather than a ‘long standing’ family name - so the equivalent ‘surname’ may originally be Jansen.
Jerome Senior marries Sarah Heath (daughter and Granddaughter of William Heath) and has nine children between 1825 and 1840. [5] The sixth, Catherine Veri, future wife of Samuel Ethelbert White is born in Norwich in 1831. Their eldest sibling, Jerome Nicholas, has a son named Herbert Bloomfield Vlieland (b: 25th November 1862 in Stalisfield, Kent d: 5th July 1958 and buried at Inglewood Cemetery, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California, USA); close to the second name given to David’s son. He is the youngest of their six children. Coincidentally, the Heaths are also from North Norfolk in the early 1700’s (William Heath of Blofield was born about 1697).
