I've recently had the loan of a book "von Gorkum of Johannes of Holland" (2003) by Vivian R. Corkum (d. 2009). Vivian traveled to Germany and researched the origins of the Corkum family. She had some assistance there from Julius Grünewald who transcribed entries from the church books of the Reformed Church in Westhofen.

According to Vivian's research, she records the earliest known ancestor of our Corkum line was "Johannes" (no last name at that time) who was born approximately 1525 and lived in Gorinchem, Holland. His wife is unknown. There appears to be two children:

  • 1. An unknown son - nothing is known about him i.e. birth, death, but he was married and had an unknown wife because there was a child.
  • 1.1. The child was Heinrich Jansen von Gorkum born in Gorinchem, died in Wesel. Nothing else known.
  • 2. Peter Heinrich von Gorkum (Sr) born about 1550 in Gorinchem. His wife is unknown. This Peter moved to Wesel, Germany about 1572. He was a tradesman/merchant and died in Wesel, date unknown. One son is known from this family.
  • 2.1. Peter Heinrich von Gorkum (Jr) born about 1599 in Wesel. He died sometime after 1657 in Wesel. He was a merchant/miller. It is this Peter Heinrich who is the subject of this profile.

It is this Peter Heinrich who moved his family from Wesel to Westhofen and in 1654 acquired the Schabenmühle (Schaben Mill) and received a concession to built an oil mill from the grain mill and a two-year exemption from taxes. The original millers had disappeared in the Thirty Years War. He operated the mill until 1657 and then returned to Wesel leaving the mill in the care of his two sons, Johann (Jan) and Peter (Jr). No more is known about Peter (Sr) after he returned to Wesel.

The history of the Schaben Mill is in the book "Von Westhofener Häusen und Leuten" (Westhofen Houses and People) By Christoph Julius Johannes Grünewald, (Westhofen, 1984) Page 102
