The name Vroom existed as a surname in Holland well before 1600. Four generations of the Vroom family are memorialized by the University of Amsterdam's Centre for the Study of the Golden Age, the progenitor having his birth in or before 1527 and each generation having Vroom as its surname.[1] The profile for Frederik Vroom's grandfather, Cornelis Hendrickszoon Vroom, includes a copy of an email (in .pdf form) from the Curator of The Netherlands Institute for Art History in which he explains the use of the name.
Frederik Hendrickszoon Vroom was described on February 21, 1649 as being 49 years old, placing his birth in about 1600. He died on September 16, 1667 and was buried four days later in the De Grote Kerk (Protestant) in the city of Haarlem.
Frederik studied under his father, Hendrick Corneliszoon Vroom, pioneer of Dutch marine painting. His brother Cornelis Hendrickszoon Vroom, became a well known Dutch landscape artist. Frederick travelled little, his ventures outside Holland including only Great Britain, and he is lesser known among the artists in his family.
