Biography

There is some confusion as to Stephen's date of birth. While Stephen, son of Andrew Vrooman and Catherine Ward was listed in the 1865 NY State Census as a 5 year old with younger brother Andrew (3), he is also listed in the extensive family history by Grace Vrooman Wickersham and Ernest Bernard Comstock as being born in 1871 and yet is still listed as son of Andrew and Catherine (Ward). ^[1]

He married Delia Simmons and was listed in the 1892 NY State census as a carpenter. He is also listed in the Schenectady City Directory after 1885 as a Carpenter and lived at 7 different addresses between 1886 and 1895. (A) 1900 US Census lists his birthdate as Sep 1868 and shows him living on Veeder Ave of Schenectady, (Ward 5 enumeration district 138) on Jun 1^[2].

A second 1900 US Census finds him, (with a birthday of Sep 1867), and his family living on Nott Terrace, (Ward 4 enumeration district 134) 5 days later on Jun 6^[3].

The 1910 US State census shows Stephen, carpenter, building houses, is living with his family 15 Apr 1910 in Schenectady Ward 10, Schenectady, New York, United States.^[4].

The 1915 NY State census shows their address as 78 Broadway in Schenectady living with 6 children. He died in 1926, under very suspicious circumstances reported in the May 21 1926 Schenectady Gazette.

The obituary stated his age was "about" 65, (supporting the 1860-61 birthdate), and correctly identified his children and wife^[5].
