Biography

Richard, son of William Vyse & Catherine Smalbroke [1] was born on 11 July 1746 [2] and was baptised on 21 August 1746 in Lichfield, the Close, Staffordshire, England.[3]

In 1762/3, he joined the 5th Dragoons as Cornet in the British army, became Lieutenant in 1766, was appointed Adjutant of the regiment in March of the following year and purchased a Captaincy in 1771. [4]

Richard married Anna Susannah Spearman on 16 September 1771 in Worcestershire, England.[5]

He was appointed from Captain of the 5th Dragoons to Major of the 18th Dragoons on 4 November 1777, [6] and to Lieutenant-Colonel on 7 January 1781. [7]

Richard married Ann Howard on 20 May 1780 in St George, Hanover Square, London, Westminster, England.[8]

In 1784, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Dragoon Guards, [9] Colonel in 1791 [4] and to be Major General on 4 October 1794. [10] During the French Revolutionary Wars, he served in Flanders under the Duke of York where he distinguished himself several times, especially at the Battle of Beaumont. [4] On 1 January 1801, he was appointed to be Lieutenant General in the army [11] and was commisioned as a General on 1 January 1812. [12]

He was elected as Member of Parliament for Beverley in 1806, [13] he subsequently stood down for his son in the 1807 election. [14]

Richard (age 79) died on 30 May 1825 and was buried on 7 June 1825 in Lichfield, the Close, Staffordshire, England.[15] His memorial inscription read as follows:[2]

Colonel of the 3rd or Prince of Wales' Dragoon Guards, son of the Reverend William Vyse, Canon residentiary of Lichfield and Coventry and Archdeacon of Salop by Catherine daughter of the Right Reverend Richard Smallbrook Bishop of Lichfield and Coventry. He married in 1771 Anna susanna Spearman who died without issue in 1772 and was buried in the Church of St. Chads at Stowe. He again married in 1780, Anne only daughter and heiress of Field Marshall Sir George Howard K.B. by Lady Lucy Wentworth daughter of Thomas Earl of Strafford, who died in 1764 leaving issue Georgiana Anne Vyse and Richard William Howard Howard Vyse. General Vyse served with distinction in the campaigns of 1794 and 1795 in Flanders and subsequently held several important military commands. Greatly eminent for professional and general knowledge and for a most zealous and able discharge of the duties of his station of the most unbounded generosity of heart and of most polished urbanity of manners. He was born 11 July 1746 and died 30 May 1825 and was buried near his father and mother in the south aisle of this Cathedral.
