Origins

Friedrich Karl was born 12 September 1652 at Stuttgart, the son of Eberhard III, Herzog (Duke) von Württemberg, and his first wife Anna Katharine, Wild-u.-Rheingräfin von Salm zu Kyrburg.

He succeeded as Herzog von Württemberg in Winnental in 1677, and was also appointed regent of the Duchy of Württemberg for his nephew Eberhard IV Ludwig from 27 November 1677 until he was declared of age on 22 January 1693. Friedrich Karl was apparently compensated with a large sum of money and being made Generalfeldmarschall, the highest rank in the Imperial Army in 1694.

Family

He married at Ansbach 31 October/10 November 1682[1], Eleonore Juliane, Markgräfin von Brandenburg-Ansbach, the daughter of Albrecht, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbach, and his second wife Sophie Margarete, Gräfin zu Oettingen-Oettingen. She was born 13/23 October 1663 in Ansbach.

They had the following children;

  1. Karl Alexander, born 24 January/3 February 1684 at Stuttgart, succeeded his father in Winnental and his cousin as Herzog von Württemberg;
  2. Dorothea Charlotte, born 1 September 1685 Stuttgart, died young 18 March 1687 Stuttgart;
  3. Friedrich Karl, born 28 October 1686 Stuttgart, died as a child at Stuttgart 10 March 1693;
  4. Heinrich Friedrich, born 16 October 1687 Stuttgart, died 26 or 27[2] September 1734 at Winnental;
  5. Maximilian Emanuel, born 27 February 1689 Stuttgart, died 25 September 1709 Dubno, Ukraine;
  6. Friedrich Ludwig, born 5 November 1690 Stuttgart, died 19 September 1734 Guastalla;
  7. Christiane Charlotte, born 20 August 1694 at Kirchheim unter Teck, married her first cousin, Wilhelm Friedrich, Markgraf von Brandenburg-Ansbach

Death

Friedrich Karl died of the effects of syphilis at Stuttgart on 20 December 1697.
