Biography

Origin

Eberhard III (or VII) was born in Stuttgart on 16 December 1614, the eldest surviving son of Johann Friedrich, Herzog (Duke) von Württemberg and his wife Barbara Sophie, Prinzessin von Brandenburg.

He succeeded his father as the reigning Herzog von Württemberg the 18 July 1628 but under the regency of his uncle Ludwig Friedrich von Wúrttemberg-Mömpelgard (died 26 January 1631) and then of his mother and his uncle Julius Friedrich von Württemberg-Weiltingen, until he was considered of age on 3 March 1633.

Eberhard married firstly the 26 February 1637 at Strassburg, Anna Dorothea, Wild und Rheingräfin von Salm zu Kyrburg (born 27 January 1614, died 27 June 1655), daughter of Johann Kasimir, Wild und Rheingraf von Salm zu Kyrburg, and Dorothea, Gräfin zu Solms.

They had the following issue:

  1. Johann Friedrich, born 9 September 1637, died 2 August 1659;
  2. Ludwig Friedrich, born 2 November 1638, died young 18 January 1639;
  3. Christian Eberhard, born 29 November 1639, died young 23 March 1640;
  4. Eberhard, born 12 December 1640, died young 24 February 1641;
  5. Sophie Luise, born 19 February 1642, died 3 October 1702, married 29 January 1671, Christian Ernst, Margraf von Brandenburg-Bayreuth;
  6. Dorothea Amalie, born 13 February 1643, died as a child 27 March 1650;
  7. Christiane Friederike, born 28 February 1644 Stuttgart, died 1674, married 28 May 1665, Albrecht Ernst I von Oettingen;
  8. Christine Charlotte, born 21 October 1645, died 16 May 1699, married 4/14 May 1662, Georg Christian von Ostfriesland;
  9. Wilhelm Ludwig, born 7 January 1647, succeeded his father as Herzog;
  10. Anna Katharina, born 27 November 1648, died 10 November or 10 December[1] 1691;
  11. Karl Christoph, born 28 January 1650, died young 2 June 1650;
  12. Eberhardine Katharina, born 12 April 1651, died 19 August 1683, married 30 April 1682 (her brother-in-law), Albrecht Ernst I von Oettingen;
  13. Friedrich Karl, born 12 September 1652 at Stuttgart, succeeded as Herzog von Württemberg zu Winnental;
  14. Karl Maximilian, born 28 September 1654, died 9 January 1689.

Eberhard III married secondly on 20 July 1656 at Stuttgart, Marie Dorothea Sophie, Gräfin von Oettingen-Oettingen, (born 29 December 1639, died 29 June 1698), daughter of Joachim Ernst, Graf von Oettingen-Oettingen, and Anna Dorothea, Gräfin von Hohenlohe-Neuenstein.

They had the following children;

  1. Georg Friedrich, born 24 September 1657, died 8/18 October 1685;
  2. Son, stillborn 12 April 1659;
  3. Albrecht Christian, born 13 June 1660, died young 20 January 1663;
  4. Ludwig, born 14 August 1661, died 30 November 1698;
  5. Joachim Ernst, born 28 August 1662, died young 16 February 1663;
  6. Philipp Siegmund, born 6 October 1663, died 23 July 1669;
  7. Karl Ferdinand, born 13 October 1667, died young 13/23 June 1668;
  8. Johann Friedrich, born 10 June 1669, died 15 October 1693;
  9. Sophie Charlotte, born 22 February 1671, married 20 September 1688, Johann Georg II von Sachsen-Eisenach;
  10. Eberhard, born 1 July 1672, died young 27 November 1672;
  11. Emmanuel Eberhard, born posthumously 11 October 1674, died young 1 July 1675.

Death and burial

Eberhard III died at Stuttgart 2 July 1674 when he was succeeded as Herzog by his eldest surviving son, Wilhelm Ludwig. He was buried in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart on 21 July 1674.
