Biography

Josiah was born in 1765. He passed away between 1850 and 1860.

Josiah had settled in Limestone, Bourbon county, Virginia (now Maysville, Mason county, Kentucky) by 25 Oct 1787, when he signed a petition to divide Bourbon County. Those who signed the petition are described as living "in the Limestone Settlements near the Ohio River."[1][2][3]

On 1 Dec 1790, Josiah, along with his father and two of his brothers, Zephaniah and George, signed on with Nathaniel Massie in the founding of "Massie's Station," in what later became Adams county, Ohio.[4][5] This was the first permanent white settlement in the Virginia Military District. The settlement later became Manchester, Ohio. He remained in that location until at least 1810, appearing in the tax lists from 1806 to 1810.[6][7][8][9][10][11]

By 1820 he had relocated to Fayette county, Ohio,[12] and by 1830 he was in Darke county, Ohio.[13]

On 1 Aug 1836, Josiah entered 80 acres of land in Jay county, Indiana, near the 80 acres which his son Edmund had purchased a few months earlier. This area, owned by Josiah and his sons (including his unproven son Joseph) was known as the Wade Settlement. Josiah's land is currently part of what is now the city of Redkey: "This land extended west from Meridian Street to the west side of the schoolhouse, and south from Main Street to the first alley north of Grandview Avenue."[14]

Josiah appeared as a head of household in the 1840 census.[15] In the 1850 census, Josiah is residing in the household of his son William Harrison.[16] By the time of the 1860 census, Josiah has died. His exact date of death has not yet been found.

Research Notes

Josiah's connection as the father of Joseph Wade is likely, but unproven at this time.
