Biography

Allen C. Wade was born 19 Feb 1826 in Ohio. He was a son of Joseph and Mary Wade. His family moved from Ohio to Jay county, Indiana, and then to Illinois. Allen married Rebecca Ausborn in Coles county, Illinois on 2 Sept 1850.[1] They had one child together, Dexter. Rebecca died on 5 July 1852 according to a photocopy of the Family Bible.

On 20 Sept 1855 Allen married Angeline Evans in Christian county, Illinois.[2]

In 1859, an Allen S. Wade appears on the Kansas territorial census in Bourbon county, Kansas.[3] It is uncertain whether this is the identical Allen Wade. It is possible that the soft C in his middle name was misunderstood as an S.

In the 1860 census, however, he was in Spruce Township, Bates, Missouri.[4]

Allen served for the Nebraska militia in the Civil War.[5][6] His memorial page can be seen at Fold3.

In 1870, he was residing in Salem, Richardson, Nebraska with his family: wife Angeline, sons Dexter, Buchanan, David K., and Ulysses, and daughter Josephine.[7] In 1880, they had relocated to Summit, Chautauqua, Kansas, all of the sons had moved out, and their youngest daughter Cora had been added.[8]

In 1889, Allen C. Wade appears in the Kansas Enrollment of Civil War Veterans, and his current address is given as Kincaid, Anderson, Kansas.[6]

On 4 Dec 1891, a note appears in the Freeman's Lance newspaper that "A. C. Wade has purchased the McNight place lying west of the city. This is one of the best suburban places in the city." The city referred to is Sedan, Chautauqua, Kansas.[9] He appears in the 1895 Kansas state census residing in that city.[10]

In about April of 1899, Allen's health declined, and it was mentioned in the newspaper that he "has been seriously sick the past few weeks and is not expected to recoeer [sic]."[11] On 2 Feb 1900, he passed away. His obituary appeared in the local newspaper:

Died, in Sedan, Friday Fed. 2d, Mr. A.C. Wade, one of the old settlers of this county. For some time Mr. Wade had been confined to his bed and was very feeble. He was buried in Greenwood cemetery at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon. He leaves a wife and six grown sons and daughters to mourn their loss. He had four sons--Deck, Lestes and Buck living in Sedan and D.K. now living in Wichita, and two daughters--Mr. John Brosius, and Mrs. John Cowell. Their many friends extend their sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. Elder J.D. McBrian conducted the funeral services.[12]
