Johann Eberhardt was baptized on 22 MAR 1732 in Poppenweiler. He is the son of Johann Georg Wäger and Maria Margaretha.[1] He married Magdalena Carver. He died 10 Mar 1796 in Fredericksburgh, Lennox, Upper Canada.
The earliest court books in thearchives of the City Council Poppenweiler,Ludwigsburg, contain the following statement on page 48 underthe date Feb 13, 1738:
Leonhard Weger, former citizen and wine-gardner, told the court in session thaty he and some other persons have the intention to emigrate to America, or the New world. In view of the fact that he has paid his debts and discharged all other obligations from the proceeds of the sale of his home and other possessions, and in view of the fact his and his wives willingness to forego all claims to the benefits, rights and privileges of citizenship on their and their children's behalf for life, no objections have been made to their emigration: however he was requested to sign his petition in his own handwriting. The enunciation itself, signed by Leonhard, is translated as follows: "Johann Leonard Wegar, former citizen-resident and vintner under the Popenweiler-Marbach administration. and his wife Catharina, nee Netherin, herewith renounce their citizenship, and that of their children, Paul and Eleasor, since they are moving into strange lands; and with them Barbara nee Neitherin , said Leonard Weegers real sister (in-law), widow of the late Jacob Mayer,citizen- resident and blacksmith in Poppenweiler The extensive properties Leeonhard disposed of prior to his leaving for the New World are shown in thePoppenweiler Taxes and Properties Book for 1737, pg 257 ff. Included are a small house and courtyard in the Rellingsgasse; 3 plots of acreage in Hochdorf, 2 in Erdmannhausen, and 3 in Marbach; 4 wine gardens; 4 meadow plots; and 1 grass and herb garden- all appraised at a total of 267 Gulden, 40 Kreuzer. Presumably the name of Leonard's wife was Catharina Margretha or Mayretha Catharina. They are believed to have arrivedat the Port of New York 12,Oct 1738 on the ship Amsterdam, or on the Anne the following day. Leonard settle in rhineck Precinct, Dutchess Co, by 1740 and in 1759 gave land on which the Wurttemberg Church (in NY) was built. He was active in the church and lived nearby in a house still occupied by Alvah Frost, Leonard d after 1775 and probably buried in thecemetery of the Wuttemberg Church near Rhinebeck. He was twice married and had children born 1738-1745 hiatus.
Listed in the 1790 Feeral census as living in New York...Pittstown with 12 chrildren. Free white males over 16-4 % Free whie females. Children born between 1763 and 1788 This Leonard was an uncle to Johann above.J Everhart found the Wagar branch Napanee in Ontario. He was a United Empire Loyalist. Very soon after the English conquest of Canada, which endes fear of futhur Indian massacres on the NY frontier Everhart and his wife Magadalena Neufel, moved with their children from rinebeck to Pittstown, an outpost twentynorth east of Albany. There he adopted the first New York spelling of Wagar.The Revolution found him well advanced in years. Nevertheless, with a son Thomas, he served under Johnsons' banner, and in 1783 received his allotments on the Bay of Quinte.
