Louis was born in Germany on August 4, 1838. He emigrated to the United States in 1849. He married Hattie S. Wagner. Before the Civil War he worked as a recorder of deeds in Philadelphia. He enlisted August 11, 1861 as a Captain commanding Company D, 88th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. [1]
From Captain Company D to Lt. Col., December 1, 1862; Col., March 3, 1863; in command of Camp William Penn, Philadelphia, 1864-65; wounded in right leg and prisoner at Bull Run, August 30, 1862; At the Battle of Chancellorsville, he was wounded again, was returned to Philadelphia; Brevet Brigadier General, March 13, 1865; Discharged June 6, 1865. After the war, Louis was director of pubic works at Philadelphia and served as the national Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. Louis died January 15, 1915 and is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA.
