James was born in August 1857, the son of Hannah Jane Thomson 1833-1905 and John Wakefield 1828-1909. He was likely born in Markham Township (the township to the north of Scarborough) as that is where his parents lived on a farm. He is in the 1861 census as a three-year old boy living with his family in a log house in Markham. He is a 12-year old boy in the 1871 census living with his family on a farm in Scarborough Township. His parents move to Vaughan Township at some point prior to 1881 and James is living on a farm with his family in the 1881 census.

At some point presumably shortly after the 1881 census, James marries Kate WELSH and the couple have two children. Nothing more is known about Kate Welsh or the two children. James moved to the United States in 1875. Presumably he visited his parents back in Ontario – how else could he show up in the 1881 census record? Maybe on one of these trips he met a Canadian woman, married her and then went back to the United States. Or maybe Kate Welsh was American and the wedding was in the United States. It is not known but if the former – ie, he met someone in Canada – a search of the census records in 1881 turns up only one possible candidate in Ontario: a 19-year old Katie Welsh in Guelph who was born in Ontairo, is Irish Catholic and who is working as a servant. All of this is speculation. Their two children are:

Margaret Wakefield

May Wakefield

Something happened to Kate Welsh (perhaps she died) as, in 1894 James marries Lydia BRANDT c1863-? who was born in Minnesota. She is of mixed French-German heritage. The couple can be found in the 1900 United States census in Buffalo, New York with their two children. The census record gives no indication as to what employment James has but the fact that the family has a servant suggests he is doing reasonably well. The two children are:

Mary Wakefield 1895-?

Robert John Wakefield 1897>1957

Nothing more is known about James or of Lydia Brandt. In the 1950s, one of their children is living in Oklahoma City.
