Biography

Robert Wakefield is born on August 2, 1866 in Canada West, the son of Hannah Jane Thomson (1833-1905) and John Wakefield (1828-1909) [1][2]. He may have been born in Markham Township, as that is where his parents lived on a farm. Or he may have been born in Scarborough Township, the township to the south (now a part of Toronto) where is parents moved sometime prior to 1871. He can be seen in the 1871 census records as “John Robt”, although it appears that the census taker has mixed his name up with his brothers [3]. He is also shown in the 1881 census records, living on a farm with his family [4]. By 1881 the family has moved to a new farm in Vaughan Township. He dies on June 10, 1887 and is buried in the cemetery of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Bendale, Scarborough [5].
