Sarah was a daughter of George and Charlotte Wakeford, christened on 7 April 1843 at Ewhurst, Surrey, England.
She was married to John Stanton, a bricklayer. The 1871 Census recorded them both as 28 years old, living in Cranley, Surrey, with one-year-old daughter Mary W. and Sarah's widowed father, George Wakeford, age 68.
At the 1881 Census the family was living in Bedlam Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey. John Stanton was 38 years old, born in Bramley, Surrey. Sarah Stanton was also 38 years old, born in Ewhurst, Surrey. Their children were 11-year-old Mary W., 7-year-old William, and 3-year-old Florence A. All three children were born in Cranleigh.  At the 1891 Census they were recorded in Ewhurst Road, Cranleigh. In addition to the family members recorded in 1881, all of whom were 10 years older than in 1881, there was a new son, Percy, age 9. John's 17-year-old son William was working as a bricklayer, like his father. The family had a boarder, 23-year-old elementary school teacher Henry A. Marshman, a native of Westbury, Wiltshire.
