Nelson’ s stage name was “Nelse Waldron”. He was a stage carpenter and later a Broadway producer.
He owned the “Aulic Restaurant”. Nelse was best known for creating the famous elevator double stage at the Madison Square Theater for Steele MacKaye in the early 1880s. Later that decade he created the indoor cyclone for Buffalo Bill's Wild West show at Madison Square Garden. Nelse's son, Arthur George Waldreaon, became the chief architect for the Bronx. Nelson died in 1917.[1] There is an image of a postcard depicting the Aulic Restaurant in the New York Public Library.[2]
Nelson’ s son Arthur was also the architect behind the WWI Bronx Victory Memorial[3]
There is a passenger index that lists 2 instances of Arthur George Waldreaon, a US citizen, probably Nelson's son, returning to the US, both times from Villefranche
1. Second Class passage of a 54-year-old Arthur George Waldreaon returning to 65 Tremont Ave, New York City in Sep 1930.[4]
The index is dated for passages 1906-1942 and the voyage would have had to take place around 1854 to be this Arthur George Waldreaon.
2. The second passage is for a 70-year-old Arthur George Waldreaon returning to 51 Chatfield Rd, Bronxville, NY in Jan 1937. Even if the date of this passage is incorrect, there are discrepancies with this being a match for this profile.[5]
According to best sources, Arthur George Waldreaon would have only been about 66 years old at his death, not having reached the age of 70.
Because of the exact spelling of the name, It would be beneficial if the books that this index refers to could be found to verify dates before discarding a possible match. Although there does appear to be an Arthur G Waldron living in the 1880s and after in directories in NYC. 8 May 2021 - Tucker-11084
There were many Newspaper Articles published about Nelse during his career. Amongst other things, he was involved in the creation of special effects for "The Drama of Civilization," created by Steele MacKaye, Matt Morgan, and Nelse Waldron for the earlier American version of the Wild West show with Buffalo Bill.
