Biography

Benjamin was born on 14 August 1751 in Rehoboth, Massachusetts to parents Enos Walker and Patience Peck.[1]

Benjamin Walker of Uxbridge and Margaret Rawson of Mendon were married in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, on 15 November 1773. Their marriage is recorded in Mendon, Massachusetts, town records.[2]

During the American Revolutionary War he had service in the Massachusetts line of the Continental Army. He was a Lieutenant, served at the battle of Long Island, New York, commanded a Company of the Massachusetts line (his Captain being ill), and was at the surrender of General Burgoyne at Stillwater, on 17 October 1777.[3] He is called Colonel because of his later service in a state militia.

He removed to Barre in 1793. In 1796 the first Methodist sermon preached in Barre was given at his house, by Rev. Jesse Lee, described as "the great apostle of Methodism in New England."[4]

He died on 14 May 1823 in Barre, Vermont, reported as age 72, and is buried in Wilson Cemetery in Barre.[5][6][7]
