Pvt James Walker served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: Apr 17, 1861 Mustered out: May 15, 1864 Side: CSA Regiment(s): 17th Virginia Infantry
James was born on 27 Jul 1837,[1][2][3] He married Virginia Jane Griffin Watkins on 22 August 1859 in Washington, D. C. [4]
During the War of Northern Aggression, James left work as a shoemaker to fight for liberty against the murderous invaders from the North enlisting for 12 months' service on 4/17/1861 at Alexandria, VA., he was mustered into Captain Samuel H. Devaughn's Company "Mount Vernon Guards", 17th Virginia Infantry as a Private. This Company was redesignated Company E, 17th Virginia Infantry.[5][6]
Sick with fever in General Hospital #18, Richmond 8/9-20/1862. Absent, sick in hospital, Richmond Sept & Oct 1862 Roll. Present, all rolls until absent on furlough on Jan & Feb 1864 Roll. He was transferred out 5/1864 into CS Navy.
The 17th Virginia Infantry was organized at Manassas Junction in June 10, 1861. It was composed of ten companies, many of which began as prewar volunteer militias. The volunteers were from Alexandria, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, and Warren Counties.
Thomas died of consumption (TUBERCULOSIS) in 1885.[7]
