Biography

NOTES: JOAN EVANS

The 1850 census says Virginia...........BUT we know that Hackey must be from Delaware:

Date: Thu, 14 Oct 99 20:23PM CDT From: Robinson To: joanevans Subject: Hackey Walker

Hackey Walker was the boyhood next door neighbor of my first Jasper Co. relative, James T. Ellis. James was born in Sussex Co., DE, in the Little Creek Hundred area. Family tradition goes that James heard trees being chopped, so he saddled up and rode over to see what the fuss was. Imagine his surprise to find Hackey clearing his own homesite!

James came to the Jasper Co. area in 1805. Apparently a huge influx of Ellises, Lloyds, Knowles, and Smiths all came from Sussex Co., DE around the same time. You may want to look there for more information on Hackey.

Good luck Lorri

Hackey has a descendant participating in the Y-dna Project, somewhat proving speculation that Hackey was probably a grandson of Thomas Walker of Somerset MD who willed to his son Emanuel:

"In the Name of God Amen I Thomas Walker Senr. of Somerset County in the province of Maryland....................

Item I give and bequeath unto my wellbeloved son Emanuel Walker fifty five Acres of Land lying on Cod Creek** called Walkers Folly being pattend only five Acres and the other fifty acres being his Lordships Manner..............

..............................I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty sixth day of April in the year of our Lord 1766 Sealed & Declared by the above named Thos. Walker"

    • Cod Creek is a many-forked stream wholly within Delaware.

CHURCHES.— Broad Creek Baptist Church— This church was organized May 31, 1781.............................there were forty seven members, who.............[included]...........William Mattocks, Alexander Mattocks, Sarah Mattocks, William Loyd, Sarah Loyd, Edward Noles, Thomas Noles, Emanuel Walker..................In ten years the church decreased from forty-seven to twenty-three by reason of the removal of several families to Georgia and North Carolina.

We know that Hackey was associated with the Maddox/Mattocks family in Jackson GA.

1803—Jackson Co. Tax List—shows some connection between Hackey Walker, Bartley Walker and the Maddox family.

1803 JACKSON COUNTY TAX LIST

Capt. Scurlock’s District

William Walker James Walker Barkley Walker, trustee for Zaphaniah Maddox and Alexander Maddox Hackney Walker Hackney Walker, agent for Leonard Maddox

There are other Walkers that have connections to each other in Jackson County including an apparently older Henry Walker who is thought to be the son of Thomas of Somerset, brother of Emanuel.

The first land purchase we find for Hackey is in Greene GA:

1790—July 11—Greene GA Deed Book F (2?)

William Philips of Greene Co. to Hack Walker of same, (no consideration given) 100 acres, granted by the Governor 17 April 1789. Signed: William Phillips Wit: Richard Lockheart, Joel McClendon Reg: 25 January 1798

[If the 1850 census is correct he would be age 21 when he purchased this land.]

A 3rd great grandson of William H.H. Walker has taken the Y-DNA test and it matches the Walker line of colonial Maryland. Additionally, many descendants of William H.H. Walker have DNA tested with different companies and show autosomal matches with other descendants of Hackey Walker.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Hackey by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Hackey:
