She was the older sibling of my maternal grandmother Margaret Walker. When her father John Walker died, she was raised by her paternal grandparents William Walker and Bridget Malady, in Sheldon, Iowa. She married Frank Dougherty.
Documents variously show her given name as Mary, and as Mae -- but in family anecdotes she was always known as Mae.
My grandmother Margaret was raised by her maternal aunt Hattie, and the youngest sibling Chesley Eugene Walker took his stepfather Charles Hinton's surname when his mother remaried and moved to St. Paul, MN.
