He emigrated from England to New Zealand where he was working as a Seaman on the Schooner "Waiapu", based in Wellington.
In 1891 John began a relationship with Ann Brown, who lived in Auckland with her husband Tobias Harrison and their children. In December 1897 Annie's husband petitioned for divorce in the Supreme Court of Auckland. The notice was published in the Auckland Star, Volume XXVIII, Issue 288, 11 December 1897, Page 2. The petition was for "a dissolution of marriage under painful circumstances". Tobias was granted a decree nisi.[3]
John and Ann moved to Australia with their daughter Ruby (b. 1892). They were married in Paddington, Sydney in 1913.
There were living in Tasmania when Ann passed away in 1921. John passed away the following year, in 1922 at the age of 62.
