Biography

Daniel WALKER, the adopted father of Ira H. WALKER, was listed as born probably between 1815 and 1818 in Cayuga County, New York[1] This listing in 1875 NY State census record is the last known census record of Daniel WALKER, the adopted father of Ira H. WALKER. He is not listed in the 1880 U. S. census household. It is thought that he died between 1875 and 1880.

His wife was named Charity, but her maiden name is currently unknown. It is believed that they married before 1840 in New York.

It is believed that Daniel WALKER married Charity before 1840 and probably in New York. A possible match for his household was found in Bennington, Genesee County, New York in 1840. This town is currently in Wyoming County, New York and is bordered by Erie County, New York and Genesee County, New York. It is possible that further information can be found in these counties about this family. I have been unable to determine the maiden name of Charity at this time.

Charity was born about 1816 in Cayuga County, New York[2], she died after 1880. Her parents are currently unknown due to the lack of knowledge of her maiden name putting a halt on any possible research about her ancestry.

Children of Daniel WALKER and his wife, Charity:
  1. Unknown Male, (Born 1835 - 1840, not present in the 1850 census record)
  2. Mary WALKER (Born: About 1839 in Genesee County, New York)
  3. Adopted Son: Ira HALL now Ira Hall WALKER (Born: October 1850 in Genesee County, New York; Died: Between 1905 and 1910 in New York; Married: Viola LESTER)
Other relations:
The Peter LESTER that appears in the 1860 Census record of the household of Daniel WALKER, is possibly the uncle of Viola LESTER. The obituary of Warren LESTER published in the Thursday Evening edition on 17 January 1916 in the newspaper entitled "The Daily News" from Batavia, NY stated that Warren LESTER, the father of Viola (LESTER) WALKER, was survived by a brother named Peter LESTER of Indian Falls.
1850 U. S. Census record of the household of Cornelius LESTER[3]
The current thought is that Mary WALKER may have been married to Peter LESTER as he is listed as the son in law in the 1880 Census record and his children were listed there as grandchildren. Mary is the only known female child of the couple so unless an unknown daughter is revealed by future research, it is most likely she was the mother of those grandchildren. The wife of Peter LESTER is not revealed in the 1880 Census record. The youngest grandchild in that record was 9 years old.
Obituary of Warren LESTER stated he was survived by his wife, a son: James LESTER of Indian FALLS, two daughters: Mrs. Viola WALKER of Indian Falls and Mrs. Enoch PHELPS of Pembroke, a Brother: Peter Lester of Indian Falls, and two sisters: Mrs. A. E. ADAMS of Batavia and Mrs. WESTON of [cannot read place, believe starts with S.]
Census Records of 1860 in Pembroke, Genesee County, NY reveal names of children in household of Warren Lester: Viola Lester (Age 6 Years), Virginia LESTER (Age: 2 months). This census record does not provide relationship data.
Census Records of 1870 in Pembroke, Genesee County, NY reveal names of children in the household of Warren LESTER: Viola LESTER (Age: 16 Years), Virginia LESTER (Age: 9 Years), James LESTER (Age: 7 Years). Also in the household was a Cornelia WEBBER (Age: 63 Years). This census record does not provide relationship data.
The Father of Lois Cornelia WEBBER, Rufus WEBBER, was a Private in Captain Benjamin PEARSON's Company, in a Regiment of Calvary headed by General Amos HALL in the War of 1812. He was paid $20.28 for service between 1 July 1812 and 2 August 1812 in Lewistown, NY. War of 1812 Service records list him in the 12th Regiment Calvalry (Bouhgton's) of the New York Militia. His wife, Permela (GRAFTON) WEBBER filed for a widow's Pension [Wid Orig. 37752 and Wid Ctf. 29456, National Archives microfilm publication M313, roll no. 97.]
The Census of 1870 lists a Frank LESTER, age 7 Years in the household. The 1875 New York State Census Record lists this individual as age 12 years in the household and lists the relationship as being "Granddaughter".[4] Note this relationship and gender of "Frank LESTER" conflicts with the 1870 United States Federal Census Listing that states that Frank LESTER, age 7 Years was a male.
Daniel WALKER was listed as born in Cayuga County, New York in the 1875 New York State Census Record as was his wife, Charity.[5] This listing in 1875 is the last known census record of Daniel WALKER. It is thought that he died between 1875 and 1880. He is not listed in the 1880 household. [Birth Estimate for Daniel WALKER is currently calculated to have been between 1815 and 1818 in Cayuga County, New York]

Research Progress

Earliest record found which possibly could have been Daniel WALKER, the father of Ira H. WALKER, is 1840 U. S. Census record of Bennington, Genesee County, New York[6]:
1 Free White Male Aged under 5 years, 1 free white male aged 20 to 30 years, 1 free white male aged 40 - 50 years, 1 Free white female aged under 5 years, 1 free white female aged 20 - 30 years.
There may have been more records previous to this one, but this is the most probable match to the family as it is known. The name of Daniel is a common one and makes identifying the correct individual difficult.
Today the town of Bennington is found in Wyoming County, New York. The town borders Erie County, New York on the west and north and also Genesee County, New York on the north. This means that it is possible that these counties might hold additional information on this family and its ancestry.

Household in 1880:
Charity WALKER (Head of the Household, Age: 65 Years, Occupation: Keeping House, Marital Status: Not Stated, Place of Birth: New York, Place of Birth of Father: New Jersey, Place of Birth of Mother: New Jersey)

RESEARCHER's NOTE: The Column containing the Gender of this individual has been overwritten. It appears that both an F (female) and a M (male) have been written in the same blank for this individual. The name and gender listed in 1870 census record was Frank LESTER, Male, but in the 1875 NY State census record this individual is listed as Frank LESTER, Female. I would tend to lean towards this individual being a male due to the name, but it could be that Frank might have been some sort of nickname. Further research of course is needed.
George LESTER (Grandson of the Head of the Household, Age: 9 Years, Marital Status: Not stated, Place of Birth: New York, Place of Birth of Father: New York, Place of Birth of Mother: New York)
