Biography
James Walker was an artist who painted historical and military art. His family emigrated to the United States when he was a child and settled in the Albany, New York area. As a youth, he traveled to New Orleans and to Mexico City. He joined General Winfield Scott's forces in Mexico City as an interpreter. In 1848, he returned to New York City. He worked in Washington, DC from 1857 to 1862 and painted "Battle of Chapultepec" there. This painting hangs in the US Capitol. He also completed a number of works commissioned by the US Government. In his later years, he opened a studio in San Francisco and concentrated on Mexican culture of early California.
