Mrs. Ella Ebright of Mesquite, Tex., arrived last week to attend the funeral of her father; also Mrs. Sallie Sketchley of Bloomer, O. T. [Oklahoma Territory]. Mrs. Ebright was accompanied by Miss Lizzie Walker who will be the guest of friends here for a while. She was raised here and has many friends who welcome her back. John P. Walker was born in Virginia, Dec. 17, 1820, and immigrated to Missouri in 1839. Feb. 5, 1845, he was married in this county to Mary H. Brown. He died March 2, 1898. He leaves an aged wife and 7 children, 5 sons and 2 daughters, who are: Nathan of Moberly; W. G., C. O., J. S. and J. M. of this vicinity; and Mrs. Sallie Sketchley of Bloomer, O.T. [= Oklahoma Territory]; Mrs. Ella Ebright of Mesquite, Texas. Mr. Walker was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, and our sympathies go out to the family in their deep sorrow. He had been in failing health for several years. He has been strongly identified with politics in this county having held several offices of trust; was a lifelong Democrat and was county surveyor for 12 years and afterwards presiding judge of the county court. He was a resident of Macon county for 59 years and was one of the oldest settlers. March 2d, surrounded by his sorrowing family, his spirit took its flight. He bore his last illness with fortitude, never murmuring nor complaining. Friday at 2:30 his funeral was preached at Bethlehem church by Rev. H. Truax of Macon, after which his remains were laid to rest in cemetery adjoining.
