Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Lewis Walker is a part of US Black heritage.

Killed in horrific railway accident in Wellington, King County, Washington. He was the porter and cook for Superintendent O'Neill, "whose private car was swept away in the Wellington avalanche" according to a contemporary news articles about the disaster.

While his death date and place are certain, the birth date and place noted on his death certificate by his wife Sarah are unproven, as is the name of his father, Henry Walker. Still unknown is Sarah's birth surname and when and where they married.

This may be the couple in 1900, where he is listed as Louis Walker, age 40, born in April 1860 in Virginia, USA, living in Las Vegas Ward 2, San Miguel, New Mexico, working as a chef and further states that he and Sarah L. Walker married in 1896 and have no children. Notice that they have roomers in their rented house, and live next door to a railroad switchman.

Before Lewis died, the couple moved to Everett, Washington and purchased a house at 3105 Everett Avenue. Probate papers found on Ancestry.com show that the house was awarded to Sarah and she filed to have it deemed her homestead.

Lewis died before the 1910 census, and is listed in numerous contemporary accounts of the mass deaths and injuries in this railroad catastrophe. And we have his death certificate, which gives his date and place of birth and his father's name.

Finally, he is buried in a plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Snohomish County, Washington. He shares the plot, owned by Sarah Walker, with Robert G Walker, buried 3 August 1915. I do not find Robert in the Washington state death records, and he is not in FindaGrave. Is Robert a son, a brother, another relative?
