Biography

Abraham Walker was born at or near Scituate, Rhode Island – his parents' known residence – in mid-July of 1749, a son of Hezekiah Walker and Mary (Davis) Walker. He married, first, Eunice Hill, daughter of Daniel Hill and Elizabeth (Eddy) Hill; widowed in 1829, he was remarried to Elizabeth's sister Sarah.

As noted on his Find A Grave memorial page (see Sources), Abraham saw extensive service with different companies of Col. West's regiment during the Revolutionary War, from 1775 to 1781. A pension record shows that he rose from private to sergeant during the period of his enlistment:

"WALKER, Abraham, private and sergeant, Providence county, all $111.67, rec $335.01, R.I. Militia, pl July 25, 1833, com March 4, 1831, age 85"[1].

He died at Foster, Rhode Island, on the 19th of September, 1835.

Disambiguation

The Abraham Walker of this profile should not be confused with his Woolwich, Massachusetts (later, Maine), contemporary (and fellow Revolutionary War veteran) Abraham Walker.

The Woolwich man's service was primarily with Massachusetts regiments, with at least two of which he served -- and from one of which he was reported as a deserter in 1777; though initially shown as a corporal, he was evidently demoted when early transferred from the 8th Massachusetts to the 7th. The Rhode Island man's service appears to have been constant (if not continuous), and honorable, and was entirely with a regiment commanded by a Col. West. His rank (see Biography above) was elevated from private to sergeant.

That said, both the DAR and SAR Lineage Books credit the Woolwich man with service in a Rhode Island unit of the Continental Line, in a company headed by Capt. William Tew, under regimental Col. Hitchcock, during 1776. This does not appear to be a matter of confusion with his Rhode Island counterpart, whose service from 1775 onward is as noted recorded as lying with the regiment of Col. West[2].
