Nathaniel was son of W. H. Walker and Sarah Elizabeth May. They moved from South Carolina to Wakulla County during the 1840s.
Brother of William H Walker and Stanley May Walker
In 1887 he was appointed Clerk in charge in Otoe, Indian Territory.
Nat was married twice. He and Mary A Cromartie (daughter of Alexander G Cromartie & Claudia Reynolds), were married 13 May 1880 in Leon County. Nat & Mary had one daughter, Nattie Mae Walker. Mary Cromartie Walker died sometime between 15 Jun 1900 (US census date recorded in Wakulla County listing Mary C Walker, age 41, b. Sep 1858 in FL, the mother of 8 children, 1 living) and Nat's 2nd marriage in Oct 1900. Her burial is unknown.
He and his 2nd wife, Alice J Tully, who he married on 31 Oct 1900 in Wakulla County, were the parents of four children.
He was commonly known as "Old Nat", a name he wrote under in this youth. He was described as "not very tall, with a reddish mustache". Nat purchased The Wakulla Times newspaper in 1886.
Nat was appointed Clerk of the Court of Wakulla County and served in that capacity for twelve years. Reading law during that period he was admitted to practice in 1880 by O. Woodson White, the Circuit Judge, (a citizen of Quincy, Gadsden County). He finished his law course at Georgetown Law University.
He attended every Democratic State Convention from 1876 until 1900. He was a delegate to the Democratic Nation Convention at Chicago, Ill. in 1896 where he was elected reading clerk. The name "Boss Cracker of Florida" was given to him by the New York World in a famous cartoon for leading Free Silver Democrats.
He was the Reading Clerk of the Florida House of Representatives for twenty-eight years. He also served in the House of Representatives for two terms.
A quote from the "Dixie" newspaper defined him as "In fact, if attributes could combine in the true type of Southerner in one great superlative of distinction, they would center on the lovable personality of Nat R. Walker of Wakulla."
Note* The exact location of Nat R Walker's grave in this cemetery is unknown. His burial in here is substantiated by funeral home records and his death certificate. This memorial marker was placed between his wife, Alice, and his daughter Jamie's markers by the Crawfordville Cemetery Committee.
