Biography

Birth

Kate was born about 1866. (1910 census)

Name

Her Hocąk name was given as WaukChaMonEWinKah (1910 census), which is for Wakjémą̄nį́wįga, which can be analyzed as, wakjé, "victory"; mą̄nį́, "to walk"; -wį-, a feminine gender infix; -ga-, a definite article suffix used in personal names. So this name means "Walking Victory Woman", or "She Who Walks to Victory". However, in the 1905 census, her name is given as WahNukChaMonEWinKah, of obscure meaning.

Marriages

In most censuses, Kate (b. 1866) is shown living alone with her son Moses Jr, but in very close proximity to Moses Sr. The latter lodged with his wife of the same name "Kate" (b. 1853). However, an Indian census taken on 1 November 1904 shows him lodging with Kate (b. 1866), who is recorded as his wife. Yet the Wisconsin state census taken elsewhere on 30 June 1905, in the township of Manchester, Jackson County, Wisconsin, shows him lodging with "Mary" (the elder Kate) and their children Caroline, Stella, and grandson Frank. The elder Kate, under the name "Mary", is also recorded as Moses' wife. This shows that the two Kates were co-wives of Moses.

Death

She died at the Tomah Indian School Agency, Tomah, Monroe County, Wisconsin on 31 May 1925 of "old age." (Death census)
