Biography

Mary Lucinda was married three times according to her obituary. The first spouse was apparently a Daniel Harkey.

From the 1860 census, she md (2) John Hough "within the year." They had two children before his death in about 1852.

On 11 Sep 1856 she md (3) Hugh L. Belk.

By 1860 her first two children by John are listed as Belk children: S.A. and M.M. who are actually chn of John Hough. Mary Lucinda had two BELK children by this third spouse.

Some of this family are buried in the BELK Family Cemetery in Gill’s Creek, Lancaster Co., SC as mentioned in the obituary of a stepson, Darling Hough.

There seems to have been another child, Lucinda Belk who only lived 11months, dying in April 1860 of Fever in Union Co., NC. Technically speaking, she she was "alive within the census year" and should have been listed with her parents. The next child, male R. C. in 1860 was 2mos in 1860. The timing would have allowed her to complete two pregnancies. [1]

In 1860 Mary Lucinda and her second husband Hugh Belk are living in Union Co., NC with her children from both marriages. [2]

In 1863, the estate of deceased husband, John, was contested by her stepson Darling Hough. [3]

Lancaster News October 24 1908 Celebrates Her 85th Birthday Mr. Editor: Mrs. Lucinda Belk celebrated her 85th birthday last Tuesday, Oct 20, with only a few of her relatives and friends; among them washer brother Mr. I P. Walkup, of the Unity section, who is now 83 years old. At ten o'clock the crowd began to gather and at twelve the dinner was spread which was enjoyed by all. The old people indulged in conversation with each other, while the young people enjoyed themselves in the beautiful grove, eating walnuts and hickory nuts and amusing themselves in many ways, during the afternoon.
