Born as Joseph Frank Wall, to Irish parents, Jane Dormer and Robert Wall, he lived in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. His siblings included: Bridget Wall Fogarty, Mary Wall Comerford; Rev. Lawrence Wall;(a Catholic Priest), Julia Wall Sullivan, Catherine Wall Lawler, John, Robert, and James. He lived for a time in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married Mary Mellen and they had two sons, Frank Joseph Wall and Lawrence Wall. Lawrence was born several months after Frank's death.
