Biography

Willard James Wallace was born 19 Jan 1891 in Dames Quarter, Maryland. He was the son of Corry James Wallace and Annie Rebecca White.

In 1892, his sister Myrtle A was born.

In 1894, his sister Mabel C was born.

In 1898, his brother Corry Adrien was born.

Another sibling was born but died before 1900.

1900s

In Jun 1900, Willard J (9) lived in Smith Island, Dames Quarter town, Somerset County with his father Corry J (34), mother Anna R (29), sisters Myrtle A (8), Mable C (6), and brother Corry A (2). Corry Sr and Anna had been married ten years. Anna was the mother of five children with four living. Corry Sr worked as an oysterman. [1]

In 1902 his sister Lorena W was born.

In 1907 his sister Madge E was born.

1910s

In Apr 1910, Willard J (19) lived on Maine Road in Dames Quarter, Somerset County with his parents Corry J (43) and Annie R (38), younger siblings Myrtle A (17), Mabel C (15), Corry A (11), Lorina W (8), Thelma W (6), Madge E (1), and a boarder, Annie's uncle, Mr Allison G White (63). Corry and Annie had been married 20 years. Annie was the mother of ten children with seven living. Corry Sr and Willard were oyster dredgers. [2]

In 1911, Willard Wallace (20) married Susie.

In Apr 1911, his daughter Hazel Wallace was born.

In Dec 1911 his sister Myrtle (19) married Thomas Rider (30).

On 15 Jul 1915, his daughter Reta Catherine Wallace was born in Maryland.

About 1916 his sister Mabel married Ray Corbett.

In Jun 1917, Willard (27) lived in Dames Quarter and worked as a sailor for H. Haucock. He was supporting his wife and two children. He was Caucasian, medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. [3]

In 1919, his brother Corry Wallace married Elizabeth Collins.

1920s

In 1920, his daughter Hazel Wallace (8) lived on Poplar St in Salisbury with his wife Susie (28) and the Shores family: widowed Mary (33) and her children Aubrey (16), Louise (12), Elsie (9), Harry (4). Susie and Mary worked as operators at the shirt factory. They were neighbors with Harvey Hastings (34) and his family, Roy Gootee (40) and his family.

In the 1920s, Willard Wallace married Della L Robertson. Della had a son Gerald Robertson and was the daughter of George and Florence L Tarr Webb.

On 22 Nov 1924, his sister Mabel Carroll Corbett (30) died in Somerset County.

1930s

About 1930, his sister Thelma married Paul Mitchell.

In Apr 1930, Willard Wallace (40) lived on Vine Street in Salisbury with his wife Della L (37) and stepson Gerald Robertson (14). The Wallace home was valued at $4,500. The age of first marriage for Willard was 20 and 19 for Della. Willard worked as a machine engineer on a ship; Della worked as an operator in a shirt factory. They were neighbors with his mother-in-law Florence Webb (50). [4] His daughters Hazel (21) and Rita (16) lived with their mother Susie (48) on Smith Street, although Susie was listed as widowed.

About 1931, his daughter Hazel Wallace married Manles L Bradley. Manles was the son of Lizzie and Daniel Bradley.

In Mar 1932, his son Willard Gerald Wallace was born in Salisbury.

About 15 Apr 1933, his brother-in-law Paul M Mitchell died. He was buried April 17th at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury, Wicomico County. [5]

On 15 May 1934, his father Corry J Wallace (68) died. He was buried at Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury. [6]

1940s

He served in the US Army during WWII.

In 1942, Willard Wallace (51) lived at 216 E Vine Street in Salisbury. He worked for Victor Lynn Lines on Camden in Salisbury. He was 5'7", 140 pounds, brown eyes, black hair, light complexion. His contact person was his wife Della L Wallace. The registration card also states his race was negro. [7]

1950s

In Jul 1954, his son Willard Wallace became engaged to marry Anna Mae Cannon. [8]

On 19 Oct 1954, Willard J Wallace (63) died at home in Salisbury. He was buried at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury. [9]

Willard J. Wallace, 63, died yesterday in his home at 212 E. Pine St. after a prolonged illness.

He was chief engineer for the Conners Marine Co. of New York City until he became ill seven months ago. He had formerly been an employee of the Victor Lynn Lines here.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Della L. Wallace; four children, Willard J. Jr. of Salisbury, Mrs. Reda Ulman of Laurel, Md., Mrs. Hazel Bradley of Salisbury, and Gerald Robertson, a stepson, of Edmonston; his mother, Mrs. Anrue Wallace of Salisbury; a brother Corry Wallace of Chester, Pa., four sisters, Mrs. Lorena Jenkins, Mrs. Madge Mills, Mrs. Inez Hastings, and Mrs. Thelma Desfalento of Salisbury; and an uncle, William White of Irvington, Va.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Church of God on E. William St. with the pastor, Rev. R.E. Crowley, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Philip L. White. Burial will be in Wicomico Memorial Park.

Friends may call at the Holloway Funeral Home tonight after 7:30 and at the church tomorrow after 1:30 p.m.
