Lew Wallace was born 1827 and spent most of his early life in Indiana. He studied law but left his studies to raise a militia company during the Mexican-American War. He was admitted to the bar in 1849. During the U.S. Civil War he served in the Union army as a general. In 1878 he was appointed Governor of New Mexico Territory. In 1880 he authored the novel, "Ben-Hur". He served for four years as U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire. He later returned to Indiana where he died in 1905.
