Biography

John Wallace served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: August 13, 1862
Mustered out: January 8, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company K, 13th Infantry Regiment of New Jersey

John was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on July 27, 1846. His parents were William Wallace, and Merriam Miller, (previously unknown). Both of John's parents were immigrants from Scotland. The family relocated to Acquacknock, Passaic, New Jersey, sometime before 1860. John enlisted in the Union Army on August 13, 1862, and served in Company K of the 13th Infantry Regiment of New Jersey, until his Muster on January 8, 1865, which occurred in Washington, D.C. Sometime prior to 1870, the family had relocated to Pennsylvania. They are seen in the 1870 Census living in the Byberry section of Philadelphia, which, at that time, was very rural. Margaret Dumbell appears as a "Boarder" living with the family, but records indicate that she and John had been married since June 5th of 1869. John and "Maggie" would have at least seven children together between 1872, and 1892, all born in Philadelphia. John appears to have earned his living as a "Weaver". This occupation is listed in each census between 1860, and 1900. John passed away on July 1, 1932. He was buried at Belvue Cemetery in Philadelphia, on July 5th. (Note...Belvue Cemetery was closed, and is now a parking lot in an abandoned shopping center. The bodies were removed from Belvue, and re-interred in Chester County, Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia Memorial Park, in Frazer).
