Biography

John Wallace was born around 1837 in Exton, Rutland.

On the 1841 census, John lived in Exton with parents William (agricultural labourer) and Charlotte, and older sister Ann. The family lived with Elizabeth Billings (60, charwoman) and Robert Billings (30 or 50, illegible profession), probably Charlotte's mother and either father or brother (more likley brother aged 30 as listed after mther so not considered head of household?)

In 1851 John, aged 13, was an agricultural labourer. He lived in Exton with William and Charlotte, and brothers Henry, Amos (or Thomas?), George and Samuel.

On the 1861 census, John still lived with his parents in Exton. He and his brothers Henry, George, Samuel and William were all agricultural labourers like their father, even though William was only ten. They had a younger sister Betsy.

John married Elizabeth Williams in mid 1861, in Oakham District, Rutland.

In 1871 the family were living in 'Lawson's House', Empingham. Their sons' birthplaces show they'd probably moved a few times in the interveneing years: Robert Henry (8, Cottessmore), John Thomas (6, Exton), William George (4 Warkton? Northamptonshire). Also resident was Henry Williams, nephew, aged 11, from Exton, with an illegible profession.

In 1881 the Wallace family were living in Barleythorpe, in "Hughes(?) Farm House" . John Wallace was an agricultural labourer, married to Elizabeth, with children Robert H, John T, William G, Fanny, Mary A and Lizzie.

By 1891 John, Elizabeth and Lizzie had moved to Steptford(?) End, Whissendine, Rutland, and the other children had apparently left home.

John died in early 1913 in Oakham district, Rutland.
