Biography

Definite:

John and Ann Wallace were the parents of William Wallace, baptised on the 9th of May 1813 in Ryhall, Rutland. John was a labourer, and their abode was Empingham.

Tentative

Ancestry.com links three further occurrences of John Wallace/Wallis (the spelling is inconsistent even for earlier family members who are definitely related).

1. A John Wallis was married to Ann Haynes at All Saints, Stamford, Lincolnshire on the 13th of May 1811, the banns document states they were both 'of this parish'.

2. According to the 1841 census, a John Wallace was born about 1781, in Rutland. Ancestry.com specifies November 1783 in Empingham, but I haven't found a source for this yet. In 1841, aged 60, he was living in Exton, Rutland, with Henry Wallace aged 25, presumably his son.

3. John Wallace died in 1851 in Oakham District, Rutland (which contains Exton and Empingham).

It certainly isn't definite that any of these are definitely parents of William. William Wallace lived some of his life in Exton, and was there with his wife and children in 1841, so it seems likely the second John Wallace is related to William. I haven't found John on the 1851 census, so the 1851 death registration sounds right.

The Ryhall baptism shows William's parents had some connection in the Stamford direction - Stamford is about 5 miles east of Empingham, and Ryhall is another 3 miles northeast of Stamford. On the balance of probablility, I'm inclined to accept that John Wallis and Ann Haynes are William's parents, but I'm willing to be disproved.

Ancestry.com then links John Wallace/Wallis's family, without any obvious sources. For future research, these are:

  • Father William Wallace (1742-1816/7) of Empingham, with baptism record 13 Mar 1742 showing he is son of Jno (John?) Wallis (possibly 1705) and Edith (possibly 1718-1783, nee Dexter?)
  • Mother Susannah Scott (1755-1840) with baptism record Apr 1755 Wing Rutland showing she is daughter of Christopher Scott (possibly 1717-, Belton) and Susannah (nee Kemp, possibly 1721-).
  • Siblings Sarah (1776-), Elizabeth (1780-1797) and Susannah (1785-1849) Wallis/Wallace/Wallice.
