Biography

Born: William Wallace was born about 1726 in Perthshire, Scotland to Alexander Wallace (abt.1699-aft.1765) and Agness Campbell (Gordon) Wallace (abt.1703-bef.1772).[1][2]

Marriage: In 1755, William Wallace married Margery Shannon.[1].

Residences:

  • December 1, 1764, Alexander Wallace of Shrewsbury Township issued to his son William of the same place: for £15, the right to 100 acres in the Forks of Muddy Creek (now in Shrewsbury Township), warranted to the grantor on Dec. 1, 1745; and Alexander Wallace of Shrewsbury Township: to William Wallace of the same place:for £5: 25 acres in Shrewsbury Township warranted to the grantor on Dec 16, 1758.[3]
  • April 20 1769 - William Wallace of Hopewell Township and wife Margery: transfer property in Shrewsbury Township by recorded deed to John Gemmill. [3]
  • Dec 4, 1769. Thomas Barnard deeds to William Wallace of Fawn Township: for £50: 100 acres In Fawn Township.[3]
  • "The Scotch-lrish in Fawn Township prior to 1770 were: ...William Wallace... " [4]
  • He appears in the 1783 Fawn Township, York Co., PA taxables list with 140 acres valued at £69. [5] [Interestingly, an adjacent entry is for Robert Tarbert (Torbit) (abt.1734-1809) who's son was married to William's daughter.]
  • In the 1790 Census for Fawn Township, Wm Wallace appears with two males 16+, two under 16 and 5 females.[6]
  • Aug 19, 1809, William Wallace of Fawn Township: deed to Thomas Wallace of the same place: for $560: (a) 100 acres in Fawn Township, the grant of 2M, 330 supra and (b) 40 1/4 acres, part of a tract sold by James Webb to George Nichol and this grantor on Jan 1, 1776.[7]

Civil Service: William Wallace of Hopewell Township, supervisor of highways (of Shrewsbury Township), 1766; constable, 1768; collector, 1769. [8]

Military Service: William Wallace of Fawn Township, private in the Fourth Class, First (Captain John Laird's) Company, Sixth Battalion, York County Militia, according to a return dated Ap 26 1775." [9]

Last Will and Testament: William Wallace executed his Last Will and Testament on Feb. 20, 1808 in Fawn Township, York, Pennsylvania, United States of America. William's children were identified as Mary Anderson, Jenny Tarbert, Margaret Anderson, Elenor Kincaid, John Wallace and Thomas Wallace. There was also a gift to "to my granddaughter, Nancy, that now lives with me". William Wallace named as his Executor Thomas Wallace. [10] The transcribed Will may be found at website Alexander Wallace Clan of York County, Pennsylvania.[11] The Will was proven on December 18, 1810.[10]

  1. Mary (Wallace) Anderson married to David Anderson.
  2. Jenny (Wallace) Tarbert married to James Tarbert.
  3. Margaret (Wallace) Anderson, b. 1757, d. 1842, married to William Anderson.[12]
  4. Elenor (Wallace) Kincaid married to James Kincaid.
  5. John Wallace, b. 1760 d. 1832; married to Margaret Anderson
  6. Thomas Wallace, b. 1766 d. 1839; married to Jane, b. 1770 d. 1849.

Research Notes

There is another/different William Wallace living not far away in Chanceford Township at the same time.[13]

There is also a William Wallace much further away in the 1774 Landowners list for East Cain Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.[14]
