Thomas was born in Scotland or England in 1762. According to his daughter's marriage certificate dated 1812, he was 50 years old at the time of her marriage and was titled.
He was a colonel serving in the British cavalry and was taken prisoner of war by Bonaparte's forces during the Napoleonic wars. He was held in Verdun, Meuse, which was the largest prisoner of war camp in France at the time. His wife, Anne Young and their daughter seem to have been living with him. Female prisoners could voluntarily enter detention with their husbands. His wife is referred to in a record among the papers of the Dundas Family of Melville, documenting requests made to Henry Dundas and Robert Dundas, 1st and 2nd Viscounts Melville and their successors, for appointments and favours, 1780-1882. A civil patronage request was made by Mrs A E Perochon and Mrs Ann Young for the protection and support of Thomas Wallace, brother of Mrs Perochon. It appears from this document, that Thomas' wife Ann was previously married and that Young was probably not her birthname. [1]
