By 1891, his father had died and William was working as a "Oilman." He was living at home with his mother in Kew Foot Road, Richmond, Surrey, and with two siblings (Herbert 12, Edward 9). His mother was running a provision store.
In 1911, he was running a shop in Camberwell, selling oil colours and other items. Household:

In 1912, William, Bessie and their three children, emigrated to Western Australia on the Ajana. William gave his occupation as "Polisher" on the ship's records. They arrived in Fremantle in February 1913.
"TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1913. IMMIGRATION TO AUSTRALASIA.
"A recent cablegram from London stated that several hundred emigrants were sailing that day to New Zealand. It also mentioned that the Ajana, sailing on the 23rd ult., was also to carry 300 emigrants to West Australia."[1]
"The steamer Ajana, which encountered the gale in which the Narrung, was seriously damaged, has passed Teneriffe, and signalled,"All well."[2]"
"IN THE LAND OF THEIR ADOPTION-ARRIVAL OF THE IMMIGRANT SHIP AJANA AT FREMANTLE ON SATURDAY.
"The Ajana brought out altogether 513 immigrants. Of this number 61 are assisted passengers, made up of 10 married couples, 22 children under 12 years, four single men, and 15 single women. The balance are nominated immigrants comprising 45 married couples, 53 wives, who come to join their husbands, 190 children, 65 single women, and 5 single men."[3]
It appears the family settled in Perth, as it was there that William died in 1937. His last residence had been Victoria Park.
His entire estate of £230 was made over to Bessie after William's death.[4]
Research Note
The Welcome Walls Project by the Western Australian Museum has closed without recording the Wallan family's arrival in 1913. The site can be visited here - http://museum.wa.gov.au/welcomewalls/browse-names - and should the database be reopened, the records on this profile would enable a Wallan entry to be added.
