Effie Waller Smith was an African-American poet of the early twentieth century. Her published output consisted of three volumes of poetry: Songs of the Month (1904), Rhymes From the Cumberland (1904), and Rosemary and Pansies (1909). Her poetry appeared in the publication Harper's Weekly and various regional newspapers.
Effie (Waller) Smith was born on 6 Jan 1879 in Pike County, Kentucky, United States, daughter of Frank Waller (1845 - 1916) and Silviney (Ratliff) Waller (1854 - 1927).
She graduated from the State Normal School for Colored Persons, now known as Kentucky State University, and was the first female Black poet from Kentucky to have her work published.[1]
Effie married Charles Smith (1877 - 1911) on 28 Feb 1908 in Lawrence, Kentucky.[2]
In 1920, Effie was 41 years old and widowed. She was living in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and was listed as a student at the Metropolitan Church Association.[3]
Around 1935, she adopted Ruth Virginia Ratliff, the daughter of a former student and friend in Kentucky who had died.[4]
Effie (Waller) Smith died on 2 Jan 1960, aged 80, and was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah, Wisconsin.[5]
