Biography

Elizabeth ("Betsey") Walling was the daughter of Elisha Walling and Mary Blevins. No source reliably establishing her date of birth has been found.[1][2] However, she was likely born between 1736-1744, either in Prince George's County, Maryland (where her father appears in 1733) or on the southwestern Virginia frontier where her father appears by 1741.[3]

Betsey Walling married William ("Will") Roberts.[4][1][2]

She reportedly died in Virginia in about 1800, but the source for this claim is unclear.

Research Notes

None of the available sources found so far include reliable birth dates or even birth order for most of the children of Elisha Walling Sr. and Mary Blevins. Maribelle Wilder provides dates for some of the children, but confirms that most are estimates and "dates of birth cannot be ascertained with certainty in most cases."[5] Carolyn Wallin provides only the list of children with no birth dates and makes clear that the birth order is unknown.[6] The estimated date of 1740 in this profile assumes that Elizabeth ("Betsey") was the youngest of the three daughters (Sarah, Margery & Betsey) identified by Mattie (Rice) Howard in 1868[1] and that all three girls were born between Joseph and James, but this is highly speculative.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

Wallen-710 and Walling-182 do not represent the same person because: They do represent the same person but birthdate should be 1729 as stated on Family Search. Elizabeth married William Roberts who was born in Connecticut.

Wallen-710 and Walling-182 appear to represent the same person because: This family routinely uses both the Wallen and Walling spellings; Elisha Walling Sr. only had one daughter who married a William Roberts. The differences in the birth dates are because both dates are rough estimates with no specific source for either.

This profile appears to be a duplicate of Walling-182. The Walling/Wallen families routinely use both spellings of this name. Elisha Wallen/Wallen Sr. (b. 1708 in Salem, NJ) is the father of Elizabeth ("Betsy") Wallen/Walling, who married William ("Will") Roberts. See Wilder, A Wallen/Walling Genealogy, p. 160-61) [1]

If there are two different Elizabeth Walling/Wallens who married two different William Roberts, what is the evidence of this? In either case, there is only one Elisha Walling/Wallen Sr, and only one of the Elizabeth Walling/Wallens was his daughter, so we need to sort this out to avoid duplicate profiles and confusion. If the William Roberts who is currently listed as the spouse of Betsy Walling is not the correct one, we should fix that marriage and/or his profile.

Elizabeth Wallen was born in 1727 and likely did not marry one William Roberts who was born in 1744. William Roberts of Connecticut and Maryland was a more likely husband of Elizabeth Wallen. More research is being done.

I believe this Betsy Walling married William Roberts who was born in New Haven County, Connecticut. DNA may prove this.

I would like to merge Walling-182 and Wallen-580 but they are married to two different men. Sorry we can't merge these two because they are the same person.
