Biography

Hugh was born in 1870.[1] He was the son of Joseph Wallis and Margaret McLean. He passed away in 1951.[2] He is buried in the Bingara Cemetery, New South Wales.[3]

In 1897, Hugh married Ada Jane McIntosh.[4]

Later in life, Hugh became lost after a fall while walking and was located the next day after a search.

81-year-old Man Lost in Rugged Country
After he had been missing from his home near Bingara from 12 noon, an 81-year-old man spent all night in rugged country and was not found until 7.30 the next morning.
He was Mr. Hugh Wallis, of "Hazeldean," Bingara, and a search party comprising some 40 or 50 searchers combed the surrounding hazardous hills and river banks for about six hours before a message came through from Uralla that a man answering the description had been given a lift in a car and had been taken about four miles the other side of Keera Station — fourteen miles from where he had been last seen by a Bingara resident.
It appears the missing man told the car driver he was to go to a certain haystack to take delivery of a mob of cattle, and an extensive search was made of the vicinity. When results were negative, it was thought that the aged gentleman may have received another lift., and trips were made out to Berry's on the Inverell-Bundarra Road and to Roberts, eight, miles from Bundarra.
Again the searchers made no progress, and the search was abandoned until daylight— about two hours away.
At 7.15 a.m. a horseman came galloping along the road with the news that the old chap had. been found and was unharmed. He was Mr. A. ("Doozer") Bilsborough, who lives in the vicinity, and who had started to search on horseback early in the morning.
Mr. Wallis told searchers that he had been frightened by a car swishing past in the night and in attempting to get out of its path he had fallen over and gone down the embankment, striking his forehead just over the left eye. He had slept most of the night and had not seen a light or heard any of the searchers coo-ees. He had not felt the cold, but he was glad it was all over. — "Bingara Advocate."[5]

On Hugh's passing the following year the following obituary was published.

OBITUARY MR. HUGH WALLIS
BINGARA- With the death of Mr. Hugh Wallis. which occurred in the Bingara District Hospital last Wednesday, another of the district's pioneers has crossed the Great Divide.
The late Mr. Wallis who was 81 years of age, had been in ill health for some time and had been a patient of the Bingara District Hospital. The unfortunate gentleman fell from his bed recently and fractured his thigh and this added to his sufferings.
On the 7th December, 1897, the late Mr. Wallis was married to Miss Ada Jane Mclntosh (who predeceased him in 1948) and the young couple went to Warialda to reside. After a short residence there, they came to Keera and about 43 years ago the property known as 'Hazeldean' was purchased. Here, the late Mr. Wallis carried on farming and grazing pursuits until his age prevented him.
A family of three daughters and two sons survive, viz.. Ina (Mrs. Jack Rattray, Bingara), Hazel, (Mrs. R. G. Harden. Central School. Wyong), and Miss Jean Wallis (Bingara) and Messrs Lindsay and Rodger Wallis, both of Bingara.
One brother (Mr. Ted Wallis, of Warialda) is the only remaining member of the Iarge family.[6]
