Biography

Joan was born about 1524, probably in Downe, Kent, England. According to a pedigree quoted in The Topographer and Genealogist, she was the daughter and heir of Richard Wallis of Cudham, Kent, England and his wife, a Burton. Joan married George Manning 13 August 1540 in Downe.^[1] Their children are identified as

1. Peter of Down
2. Thomas, married Mary Botley of Surrey
3. George, died in Normandy (no offspring)
4. William, killed in Ireland (no offspring)
5. John, married Margery, daughter of Thomas Johnson of Brenchley, Kent
6. Anne, married Thomas Lambert
7. Joan, married Henry Welsh
8. Catharine, married Hugh Underbill
9. Elizabeth, married Griffin Greene
10. Dorothy, married John Webb of Surrey
11. Phebe, married James Waters^[1]

Joan is named along with her children in her husband's will, proved 16 May 1583. She was buried at Downe 5 Jun 1583.^[2]
