Cordelia was born in Bosullow, Cornwall, England, in 1833 to Thomas Wallis and Ann Trembath. She was a twin of James Wallis. Cordelia and James were christened on 17 November, 1833 in Madron.[1] In 1855, Cordelia married James Trembath in Pendeen, Cornwall[2] and the couple migrated to Australia. Cordelia passed away in 1896 at Dry Diggings (near Hepburn), Victoria, Australia.[3]
Cordelia was one of 12 children of Thomas and Ann Wallis.[4]
On various internet-based Family Trees and in Government BDM registers, Cordelia’s LNAB has been given variously as WALLIS and WALLACE.
For instance, in the Victorian (Australia) BDM indexes, [5] where Cordelia’s name appears on the birth and death records of each of her nine children, there is a preponderance of Wallace spellings.
In those same (Victorian) records, her Proper First Name has (at least) seven variations in spelling, including: Cordelia, Cordilia, Cardelia, Cadilia, Kadelia, Kedilia, and Kardinia.
The Cornish baptismal and marriage records are clearly consistent with the proper names of CORDELIA and WALLIS. Cordelia can also be seen as a family name passing through several generations.
